#304...suck it up ladies.

There has been a lot of discussion going on lately in j- land about the war, and our men and women fighting and dying over there. Hopefully, by now too, you've read the letters I posted recently here from Matt- a young soldier who gives us a real look at what's going on right  now, over there...

Jamey's wrote about Lt. Childers - our first casualty of the war in Iraq... Armandt gives a soldiers view and Remo posted some excellent insight too - the men, it seems - get it.

But what of we women?

I am a little confused, no alot confused actually, as to the women's thoughts and responses recently ...the great majority, it seems are hesitant to commit or outright support this war on terrorism.  Look, no one says we have to like it... I sure as hell don't. But sometimes, hard decisions, hard sacrifices are necessary.  Not every problem can be solved quietly, over a nice luncheon and a cup of tea.  Is it because we're female - we should always take the back seat to any of these matters?  Always play the delicate, weeping, prayer circling, frightened half...

Let's not forget, shall we -

Passenger jets were used as guided missiles -  and no warning.

Body bombs were planted on passenger trains - and no warning.

Car bombs go off at check points - the list goes on and on...

Do not let, Lt. Childers death, or any other service people's death or any civilian's death - be in vain.

Terrorists do not want peace. They do not want to negotiate.  They play dirty - and they like it that way.

It's real simple -  Their only message is to hate - they live it, breath it, drink it and eat it. They indoctrinate their young, their old, and their women and babies to it.  They are not going to go away just because we wish it, or are uncomfortable with it, or are inconvenienced by it.

Remember, 9-11?  Do you?   They stood on our doorstep and instead of ringing our doorbell - they just blew the GD door in.  no notice - no warning...

You know, a little over a month later - I visited Ground Zero. First hand, I smelled the jet fuel and the smoke. I saw the black soot that covered entire skyscrapers, and the twisted steel, and the tears of family members who lost their loved ones there. Hell, I tasted the terror dust in my mouth.  I saw the big gaping hole in the ground and the bigger gaping hole in the skyline. I saw the mountain of twisted metal and cement. I saw the men and women and machines still working, more than two months later, in the recovery efforts.

I heard for myself, the huge silence that the terrorists left for all of us to hear.

I remember standing on top of those towers with my innocent children on class trips, for crissakes.  I remember looking over the edge to all the people-ants below, at the masses of innocent people who calmly went to work there, of the crowds of innocent schoolchildren who visited there almost daily.

If those memories of planes flying into towers, and buildings crumbling, and people falling, and screaming, and jumping -  didn't wake you up, then what, will?

Perhaps when it's your child's daycare, or your children's school, or your church, or your place of employment?  Maybe when it's your very own home?

I ask you, how much more would it take to get you committed to securing not only your safety, but your neighbor's, as well?  When will you say, enough is enough?

How dare we sit and cry foul or wring our hands, or worse, refuse to even discuss it. Our men need our support ladies, regardless of our emotional cost. They also need our appreciation and our love - now- not tomorrow or the next day.

Some of the strongest people I know are women - Sure this is hard, it's tragic, and it's ugly.  But sometimes hard, tragic and ugly things are necessary. Suck it up ladies, I say.  If they can bear it, so can we.

Very powerful!  I think it ought to be published in as many newspapers as possible!  Thank you for sharing this.  We get lazy, don't we, just sit around and begin to forget.  But we shouldn't.  And sacrifice does have to be made if we are to get anywhere.

Touche', Flo! I love the folks in J-Land, but until the terrorists knock on their door to commit the same atrocities on THEIR family, they just don't get it. Don't let anyone sell you the "It's because of W" argument either, since the turds are busy blowing up stuff all across the globe in places that have nothing to do with us. They are on a de-stabilization campaign designed to weaken democratic countries and allow them to slip in the backdoor. When Middle Africa becomes the newest hotbed of Islamic fanaticism[it will], the liberals will blame it on Reagan policies on AIDS. They don't have anything else.  "GO FLO! GET 'YO GROOVE ON"

I dont pretend to like this war.  It saddens me every single day that it has come to this.  I fear we have another veitnam on our hands.  I do support our men and women fighting over there.  I think there is no greater humans than the men and women of our armed forces.  I dont like to talk about it, Flo.  I will admit that.  I think its because there is no easy answer to all this mess.   The remnants of 9/11 still haunt me.  My heart bleeds for those who lost loved ones there, as well as the victims of other terrorist acts.    Great entry once again....very thought provoking.

Flora, I passed the letters to my son, who had tears in his eyes thinking about this whole stupid mess! More Americans have died this month [April ] than during the whole invasion.

Terrorism is nothing new.  It's been going on for centuries.  The United States is still a young country and we've seen our own share of terrorism right here in the US.  Other countries deal with this EVERY DAY.  No one in the US really stood up and took notice until the towers came down.  Most people don't care unless it's happening to us.

This war won't end terrorism.  But if we mean to start a war, and go about it respectfully, then we have to aim our guns in the right direction.  We have to make NO mistakes.  There's no room for public apologies and shrugs of stupidity from our leaders, when men and women - and I'm not just talking about Americans - are dying.  I agree that sometimes war is a necessary evil.  I'd just hope that any war we engage in isn't aimless.  Sometimes, lately, I feel like this war is aimless.

That said, I will ALWAYS support the troops and their families.  I'm grateful for their sacrifice.  I don't have to agree with the decisions of our leaders in order to be patriotic.  Questioning our leader's judgement is the best form or practicing my rights that I can think of.

I think I'm probably not wired to accept war.  I love. That's what I do.  I'd rather die than live in a world filled with hate - whether it comes from some nameless terrorist or an American man of God who thinks we should just "kill 'em all!"  There are people out there who thinks this would be the solution to everything.  Maybe I'm naive.  Maybe I'm acting like a child.  Maybe I'm playing the part of the frightened woman.  But that option just doesn't appeal to me much.

This is the longest comment I've ever written.  LOL

Aimless?

                                  how disappointing

My fault?! I'm happy to be behind this entry, although I'm not calling out any women. Us guys tend to be very vocal, for better or worse.
While I'm not in any way a hawk, and I would love for Bush and his cronies to take a fast sub into the Marianas Trench, the fact is that America is in a unique position to push terror backwards as far as possible. We'll never be rid of it, Slo is right. And we can all sit back in relative comfort while our fellow citizens go and die in the process. But there is a world out there that wants us to cower, and to do so would only invite more attacks on our innocents. Furthermore, if we are going to criticize Bush for not acting prior to September 11th, yet criticize military actions that (ostensibly) are meant to combat terrorism, we're talking in circles.
All this said, the Iraq situation was never really about terrorism, and I believe the lives of our men and women are being wasted.

I agree with you jamey - the war in iraq is not so much about terrorism, but the twin towers sure as hell were.

Some would say iraq is about special interests groups, ie oil...which may or may not be true - but we surely cannot ignore saddam's crimes against humanity either...the mass burial graves, the wood chippers, the rapes/murders...either way - neither terrorism nor that kind of crap should ever be tolerated.  For me, that pretty much justifies our presence over there.

The point of my rant, however, was more to just get more women to think more strongly about their roles and feelings when it comes to watching our men put on their uniforms...

and okay, it was remo's and armandt's fault then...hee.

slo - i certainly hope you are not wired to accept war for no cause.  To do that, would cause you to lose your humanity too.  As someone who loves...and we all do that...then we should also extend that feeling to our worldy neighbors, because the innocent are exactly who we should be trying to protect, and not just our children, but every one of the world's children are worth dying for.

make no mistake slo, if this war were aimless - then the whole country would be  reduced to a pile of ashes by now. we could have won this war, and still can very easily, except for one small, but very important concept - are are trying not to hurt innocents. Every time a shot if fired it is almost unnecessary.  We could completely obliterate a city without impunity except that we DO care for the innocents.  And because of that - soldiers are dying.

And i'd rather die trying to eliminate the terrorists or the hitlers in the making, then just handing it over to them because it's just too iccky to do anything else.

bernmilo - thanks for visiting and thinking..

armandt - thanks for your thoughts and inspirations and your service.

aiibrat - tragic era?  it's pain with purpose.

zenga- i dunno, what does my man think?

dawn - you've been through this before, eh?  now it's our turn...

vince - americans have died, but how many more saved?  thank you for teaching your son...

connie - good, i don't like it either.  vietnam...well, vietnam lost the support of it's country, eh?  and who paid for that...our soldiers.  if it were easy - it wouldn't be messy.

remo - it's all your fault.  so i guess, i'll say thank you too, for that, and getting my wheels turning.

Wow, go away for a weekend, and I miss so much.  What a fine post, my fine friend. I do not do enough.  I just hate war.  And I am afraid I don't beleive that what is happening "over there" has much to do with Terrorism, but regardless-- men who don our nation's uniforms need our support and love, as long as it is not blind faith.  Don't ask me not to question the merits of war.  As far as i can see, they are almost always money-motivated, and have little to do with ending tyranny.  What we don't dwell on is the art that crosses cultures' differences, transcends political differences...and we should.

Personally, I believe that the war in Iraq is an unjustified war.  I also believe that the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism are two different things.

Having said that, let me also say that I am not a pacifist and I do realize there are times when war is the only and final answer.  I also realize and appeciate the enormous sacrifice our soldiers are making everyday; that is why it's important to exhaust all possible solutions and ensure that the reasons for war is just before we ask them to make the ultimate sacrifice.
